Possible Data Loss After You Enable the "Write Cache Enabled" Feature (281672)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
This article was previously published under Q281672 SYMPTOMS When you enable write caching on a hard disk, the hard disk
receives the synchronize cache command when you shut down the computer, and the cached data is
written to the hard disk before the computer shuts down. However, when you shut
down the computer after the first shutdown, the hard disk does not receive the synchronize cache command and does not write the cached data to the hard disk
before the computer shuts down. Note that this occurs even though write caching
is enabled. When this problem occurs, you may experience data loss or you may
receive an error message on a blue screen. CAUSE This problem may occur if the Windows 2000 hard disk driver
does not correctly process write caching.RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, obtain the latest service
pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article
