SYMPTOMS

When you deploy a program with Group Policy, it is possible to remove previous installations of the program that were not installed by Group Policy by setting the following option on the Advanced menu:

Remove previous installs of this product for computers, if the product was not installed by Group Policy-based software Installation.

However, after setting this option and deploying the program to users or computers, you may discover that earlier (legacy) versions of the program have not been removed as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because this option does not work for earlier (legacy) versions of programs. Although the check box is functional, earlier versions of a program will not be removed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
