The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Office 2000 Server Extensions
- Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions)
This article was previously published under Q281460 SYMPTOMS
When you install the Office Server Extensions on a computer with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 installed, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft SQL Server Version Switch
An error occurred which prevented a successful version switch.
Please make sure the Registry Editor, Query Analyzer and ISQL are
closed, and try running vswitch.exe again.
An unexpected error occurred Error code 0x80044814.
This error message is followed by:
Microsoft SQL Server Version Switch
Your -SwitchTo argument was invalid. Please use 60, 65, or 70
After these error messages, the OSE install completes successfully, but you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Office Server Extensions Setup
Setup was unable to install the Microsoft Data Engine. If you
continue the installation, you will need to provide the name
of another machine running Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 or greater. Do
you want to continue?
After restarting, you receive the following error message when you try to open the SQL Enterprise Manager:
MMC
Snap-in failed to initialize.
Name: Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager
CLSID: {00100100-1816-11D0-8EF5-00AA0062C58F}
The SQL Server Service Manager displays the following error message when you select the SQL Server Agent:
SQL Server Service Manager
The specified service does not exist as an installed service.
CAUSE
The Office 2000 Server Extensions installation does not detect the installation of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 and attempts to install the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE). This damages the installation of SQL Server 2000. This situation occurs because SQL Server 2000 was released at a later date than Office 2000, and the Office 2000 Server Extensions installation routine does not recognize the SQL Server 2000 installation.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, do one of the following methods:
Method 1
Use the /nd switch when you install the Office 2000 Server Extensions. Run Setup by using the following command:
where X: is your CD-ROM drive letter.
Method 2- Open up the SQL Enterprise Manager.
- Right-click the SQL Server that you are using to store the collaboration database, and then select Properties.
- On the Security tab, change the authentication method to SQL Server and Windows.
- Verify (while still on the Security tab) that the Startup Service Account is using the proper account information.
- You will be prompted to stop and restart the SQL Server service.
MORE INFORMATION
If your SQL Server 2000 installation has been damaged, you must restore the services. In some cases, you can use the Setup program to reinstall only the client tools. After you have reinstalled the client tools, you must reapply your current service pack. In some cases, you must uninstall SQL Server 2000, restart the server, reinstall SQL Server 2000, and then reinstall your current service pack.
