Fatal Exception 0E in Scsi1hlp.vxd After Upgrading to Windows Millennium Edition (281252)

SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade certain Compaq computers that were shipped with Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition preinstalled and have a digital video disc (DVD) drive to Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may receive the following error message:
A fatal exception 0E has occurred at xxx:xxxxxxxx in VxD SCSI1HLP
If you click Cancel, your computer may stop responding (hang).
CAUSE
The Idecdvsd.vxd file that was supplied by Compaq to assist in operating the DVD drive causes this issue. The file is version number 1.0.0.0 with a size of 8.22 KB.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue:
- Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type scsi1hlp.vxd, and then click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, right-click the Scsi1hlp.vxd file that is located in the Windows\System\Iosubsys folder, and then click Rename.
- Type Scsi1hlp.old, press ENTER, and then restart your computer.
NOTE: If you are using small computer system interface (SCSI) devices that require the Scsi1hlp.vxd file, follow these steps:
- Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key, and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu.
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type idecdvsd.vxd, and then click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, right-click the Idecdvsd.vxd file that is located in the Windows\System\Iosubsys folder, and then click Rename.
- Type Idecdvsd.old, press ENTER, and then restart your computer.
