BUG: Cannot Load NLB WMI Provider on a Computer with a Name that Starts with a Numeric Character (281237)

SYMPTOMS

The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) provider for Windows 2000 Network Load Balancing (NLB) will not load on a computer with a name that starts with a numeric character. If you attempt to load the provider, a 0x80041013 "Provider Load Failure" error occurs.

CAUSE

The NLB WMI provider attempts to interpret any server name that starts with a numeric character as an Internet Protocol (IP) address.

RESOLUTION

Do not use computer names that start with numeric characters if you use any product that accesses the NLB WMI provider.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Application Center 2000 uses the NLB WMI provider for clusters that employ NLB load balancing.
