XADM: SMTP Proxies Created with Trailing Periods (.) (281217)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server

This article was previously published under Q281217

SYMPTOMS

When an SMTP Site Addressing configuration of %g.%s.%m@... is copied into a recipient policy in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, the generated SMTP addresses may contain a trailing period (.), causing them to be invalid.

CAUSE

Some recipients may not contain all three fields (that is, Givenname, Surname, and Middle Initial), so when the SMTP address is created using the rule specified in the "Symptoms" section, additional periods (.) may be created. In some cases these periods are removed by the proxy generator, however, others are not. For example, users without a Surname or Middle Initial, or System mailboxes such as the system attendant will have a trailing period.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

MORE INFORMATION

With the invalid SMTP addresses associated to these mailboxes, mail may not delivered correctly, which can cause additional complications with replication or other system functions.
