OL2002: Long-Distance Phone Number Preceded by a 1 Does Not Appear Correctly in Contacts (281018)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q281018

SYMPTOMS

When you type a long-distance telephone number preceded by a 1 (for example, 1 555 222-2222) under Business or Home in a Contact, and you then press ENTER or the TAB key, no parentheses may appear around the area code.

When you double-click the number, the Check Phone Number dialog box appears, and the number may display the following properties under Phone Details:

  • The phone number in the Business or Home box contains no dash between the prefix and the last four digits.
  • The entire phone number appears in the Local Number box.
  • There are no parentheses around the area code.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, precede the country code ("1" for United States) with a plus sign (+). A US number entered as follows:

+1 555 555 1212

would be resolved by Outlook as:

+1 (555) 555-1212
