XADM: Setup Stops Responding and You Receive an "Error Creating Process" Error Message (280847)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q280847

SYMPTOMS

When you either install or remove Exchange 2000, you may receive an error message that is similar to:
Error creating process: C:\DOCUME~1\..\LOCALS~1\Temp\1\IXP000.TMP\SrchAdmStp.exe /s /u /a:ExchangeAdmin. Reason: The system cannot find the specified path.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when you install Exchange 2000 if the account that you logged on with has an account name that begins with a number sign (#). For example, if you are logged on with an account that is named #Exchange, the error message is similar to:
Error creating process: C:\DOCUME~1\xchange\LOCALS~1\Temp\1\IXP000.TMP\SrchAdmStp.exe /s /u /a:ExchangeAdmin. Reason: The system cannot find the specified path.
The Temp folder structure is created by Microsoft Windows. Windows creates the correct location with the leading number sign. However, Exchange 2000 Setup cannot receive that information from Windows. Exchange 2000 truncates the name before it continues, which makes the path incorrect.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use an account with a name that does not start with a number sign to install Exchange 2000.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
