PictureWorks PhotoEnhancer Plus or Other 16-Bit Program Accesses the Wrong Device (280831)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

This article was previously published under Q280831

SYMPTOMS

When you use PictureWorks PhotoEnhancer Plus version 3.2 or any other program that uses the 16-bit TWAIN.dll file, if you install a Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) device and a TWAIN device, TWAIN Acquire brings up the wizard for the installed TWAIN device even if you click the WIA device in the Select TWAIN Source check box.

If you install two WIA devices and a 16-bit TWAIN program, such as PictureWorks PhotoEnhancer Plus version 3.2, TWAIN Acquire brings up the wizard only for the last device that you installed, which is TWAIN.dll.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because WIA does not support the 16-bit TWAIN.dll file.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, have only one device (TWAIN or WIA) connected when you use the 16-bit program. These programs work fine individually. If you want to connect multiple devices, use the following information as a guideline:
  • If you install more than one TWAIN device, you can use each one.
  • If you install more than one WIA device, you can use each one.
  • If you install both TWAIN and WIA devices, a 16-bit TWAIN program always chooses the TWAIN device, even if you click the WIA device.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
