The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002
  • Microsoft Publisher 2002

This article was previously published under Q280620

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 2002 and Microsoft Publisher 2002, when you close a document, you are asked whether or not you want to save items that you have copied to the Office Clipboard so that you can use them in other programs. When you again start either Word or Publisher, any graphic files (for example, JPEG, BMP, GIF, or TIFF formats) that were left on the Clipboard from an earlier session of Word or Publisher, are not pasted correctly into your document. The frame for the image is inserted with a red "X" in the upper left corner to indicate that the image is not available.

NOTE: This issue occurs only in Microsoft Word 2002 and Microsoft Publisher 2002.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you copy a picture to the Office Clipboard and then choose to keep the picture on the Clipboard for use with other programs after you close Word or Publisher. If you then place at least one other item on the Clipboard by copying or cutting it from any Office program, the pictures left on the Clipboard from an earlier session of Word or Publisher become unavailable for pasting, even though they still appear available on the Clipboard.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, re-insert the picture from its original location.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
