OFFXP: Selected Menu Items in Pumpkin Scheme Display the Wrong Highlight Color (280610)

In any of the Microsoft Office XP programs listed at the beginning of this article, when you select the Pumpkin (large) desktop scheme, the selected menu item may be gray instead of the standard Pumpkin (large) desktop scheme of purple or white with a purple outline.
NOTE: The selected menu item color is also incorrect in other desktop schemes. For example, this also happens with the Plum desktop scheme.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
- Your computer is running Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me).
-and- - You have a Diamond Multimedia Stealth III video graphics adapter (S3 chipset) installed on your computer.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.
Method 1
Contact your video card manufacturer for a video driver update.

Change the desktop scheme, so that Selected Items is set to the color that you want. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Display.
- In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Appearance tab.
NOTE: Notice the colors before you make changes, so that you can reuse the original colors if you want to. You can also define the current color scheme as a custom scheme, so that you can easily reuse the original settings. To define a custom scheme, click Save As, and then type a name for the current color scheme. After you change the colors, you can reset the colors to the original settings. To do this, click the custom scheme in the Scheme box, and then click OK. - On the Appearance tab, click Selected Items in the Item list, and then click the color that you want. Or click the Scheme drop-down list to select a desktop scheme.
Method 3
Change the color depth of the display to a high color-depth setting.
To change the display color-depth setting, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Display.
- In the Display Properties dialog box, click the Settings tab.
- On the Settings tab, click Colors and change the color depth to a higher setting. Follow the remaining instructions that you receive.
