SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start a Microsoft Office XP program, the Microsoft Windows Installer starts, and then you may receive the following message:

Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office version

Gathering required information...

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you follow these steps:
  1. You have Microsoft Office 2000 installed and configured on the computer.
  2. You install Microsoft Office XP, and then, during Setup, you choose to keep the existing Office 2000 programs (and therefore, for the moment, have both versions of Office installed).
  3. You start an Office XP program.
  4. You uninstall Office 2000.
  5. You attempt to start an Office XP program.
This behavior occurs because when you uninstall Office 2000, you remove software components that are shared by both Office 2000 and Office XP.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, allow the Windows Installer to continue configuring your Office XP installation.
