OFFXP: Office Shortcut Bar Buttons Remain After Office 2000 Programs Are Removed (280565)

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade Microsoft Office 2000 to Office XP, buttons for removed Office 2000 programs may unexpectedly remain on the Office Shortcut Bar.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs in the following situation:
  1. You customize the Office 2000 Shortcut Bar to display buttons for the Office programs that you want.
  2. You create a custom installation of Office XP with the following configuration:
  • You choose a new location for the installation of Office XP.

    -and-
  • You choose to remove the Office 2000 programs that are associated with the buttons on the Office Shortcut Bar.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, manually remove the buttons that you do not want from the Office Shortcut Bar. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click a blank portion of the Office Shortcut Bar.
  2. On the shortcut menu, click Customize.
  3. On the Buttons tab in the Customize dialog box, under Show these Files as Buttons, click to clear the program button check boxes that you do not want, and then click OK.
Notice that the buttons for the removed Office 2000 programs no longer appear on the Office Shortcut Bar.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
