ACC2002: Error When You Select an Option from the Office Links Menu (280557)

This article applies to a Microsoft Access database (.mdb) and to a Microsoft Access project (.adp).

SYMPTOMS

On the Tools menu, you can point to Office Links, and then click Publish it with Microsoft Word, Analyze it with Microsoft Excel, or Merge it with Microsoft Word. When you click one of these options, you receive one or more of the following error messages:

When you click Publish it with Microsoft Word or Analyze it with Microsoft Excel:

The managed software installer failed to install the program associated with this file. Please contact your system administrator.

-or-

The Windows Installer failed to install the program associated with this file. Please contact your system administrator.

followed by:

You tried to use a form, report, or datasheet that contains an OLE object, but the OLE server (the application used to create the object) may not be registered properly. Reinstall the OLE server to register it correctly.
When you click Merge it with Microsoft Word:
Microsoft Word 2002 is required to run the Mail Merge Wizard.

CAUSE

You clicked the Installed on first use option when you installed Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel.

RESOLUTION

If you click Publish it with Microsoft Word or Merge it with Microsoft Word:

Open Microsoft Word to complete the installation, and then close it after the installation is complete.

If you click Analyze it with Microsoft Excel:

Open Microsoft Excel to complete the installation, and then close it after the installation is complete.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. On a Windows 98-based computer, install Microsoft Office XP and choose a custom installation. Click Run all from my computer for Microsoft Access, and click Installed on First Use for Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
  2. Open the sample database Northwind.mdb.
  3. Click the Employees table, point to Office Links on the Tools menu, and then click Publish it with Microsoft Word.
Note that you receive one of the error messages mentioned in the "Symptoms" section of this article.
