SYMPTOMS

In a Microsoft Office program -- for example, Microsoft Word -- when you click Office Clipboard on the Edit menu, more than one instance of the Office Clipboard icon may be displayed in the system tray. When you move the pointer over the Office Clipboard icon, the icon disappears.

NOTE: The Office Clipboard icon may disappear after you move the pointer over it even when only one icon is present.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when an Office program quits unexpectedly (crashes) and the Office Clipboard icon is visible in the system tray. The Office Clipboard icon does not automatically disappear as it should when a program that uses the Office Clipboard quits unexpectedly. When you restart the Office program and then start the Office Clipboard again, a second instance of the Office Clipboard icon is displayed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, move the mouse pointer to the first (phantom) Office Clipboard icon; the icon disappears.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
