Screen Saver Deactivates and Returns to Desktop During Battery Operation (280430)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional

This article was previously published under Q280430

SYMPTOMS

If the LCD Off timer is set to a longer time than the screensaver timer on a Windows 2000-based computer in battery operation mode, the screen saver may stop (which returns the screen to the desktop) and the screen saver may continue to start and stop periodically, even though you have not pressed a key or moved the mouse to activate the computer.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if you are operating a portable computer on a battery and Advanced Power Management posts the PBT_APMPOWERSTATUSCHANGE message on a regular interval. The screen saver does not stay on, but keeps recycling on and off. The screen saver also continues to reset the Power Management timer; therefore, the computer never goes into suspend mode. Windows 2000 shuts down the screen savers on all the WM_POWERBROADCAST messages that are posted.
