WD2002: OnUpdate Event Fails Updating CommandBars in Different Document (280427)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2002

This article was previously published under Q280427

SYMPTOMS

The CommandBars object exists at the application level. There should only be one CommandBars object per application and it's events should fire regardless of the document context.

If you create a CommandBars object and synch it to the OnUpdate event in Microsoft Word 2002 however, it may no longer fire if you switch to another document and update the CommandBars.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because of the Single Document Interface (SDI) feature. When SDI is turned on, Microsoft Word builds new toolbars for every document window opened.

WORKAROUND

Change to Multiple Document Interface (MDI). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. Click the View tab. Click to select the Windows in Taskbar check box.
  3. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
