This article was previously published under Q280375 SYMPTOMS
When a client attempts to connect to either a Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) dial-up server, the client may receive the following error message:
Error 629:
You have been disconnected from the computer you dialed.
Double-click the connection to try again.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when either the Windows Me or Windows 98 Second Edition computer is configured to enable the dial-up server to use passthrough authentication (user-level security) to authenticate and to connect dial-up clients to a NetWare server. The dial-up server has the Require encrypted password option enabled.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, you can use either of the following methods: Method 1
For both Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows Me dial-up server computers, you can use this easy method; however, it can cause Password Authentication Protocol (PAP) to be used, which you do not want if your system needs a high level of security.
To use this method, follow these steps: - Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
- Double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.
- On the Connections menu, click Dial-Up Server.
- Click the Server Type button, and click to clear the Require encrypted password check box.
Method 2
This method only works on Windows 98 Second Edition-based computers. To use this method, perform the following steps: - Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
- On the View menu, click Folder Options.
- Click to select the Show all Files check box, and then click OK.
- Click Start, click Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- Rename the following files located in the Windows\System folder with a different extension (such as, se):
Pppmac.vxd to Pppmac.se
Pppndi.dll to Pppndi.se
Rasapi32.dll to Rasapi32.se (You must do this in Safe mode.)
Rnaui.dll to Rnaui.se (You must do this in Safe mode.) - Insert a Windows 98 First Edition compact disc in the CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start, click Run, and then in the Open box, type:
Then click OK. - Click Extract one file from installation disk.
- Extract the preceding four files into the Windows\System folder.
- Close the System File Checker (SFC), shut down your computer, turn off your computer, and then restart your computer.
- Double-click My Computer, and then double-click Dial-Up Networking.
- On the Connections menu, click Dial-Up Server, and then click Server Type.
- Click to select the Require encrypted password check box, and then click OK.
