Problems Using Plug and Play Modem with Windows 2000 on Compaq Prosignia 200 or 720 (280365)

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 2000 on a Compaq Prosignia 200 or 720 computer with a Plug and Play ISA modem, a COM port may appear in Device Manager with a yellow exclamation point with a "Device failure" (code 10) status. For example, this may occur with the Compaq Netelligent 56K ISA fax modem. This modem uses a jumper that is set to "ISA PNP enabled" by default. Note that the modem functions properly.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because the Compaq SmartStart Setup utilities that are used to stage the computer before you install the operating system may have set a Plug and Play function in the system settings to "on". This specifies an IRQ and memory range at the socket level for the modem to use.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, change the "ISA Plug and Play Function 1" setting in the BIOS to disabled. For information about how to do so, view the documentation that is included with your computer, or contact Compaq.
