SYMPTOMS
When you are accessing the properties sheet for the Microsoft Exchange Connector for Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) Mailboxes in the Exchange Administrator, you receive the following error message:
A dial-up connection entry must be selected.
Any further attempts to modify settings, or close the properties sheet result in the same error being displayed. To close the dialog box, you must click OK. You cannot make any changes to the POP3 connector, and the Modem or Terminal Adapter option is selected, but it is grayed out. You can switch to the Router, or Full-time/Broadband Modem options, but you still cannot modify the properties.
CAUSE
This error occurs if Remote Access Service (RAS) is uninstalled, or damaged, and you have configured the POP3 Connector to use a modem, or terminal adapter for its Internet connection. You do not receive this error message if you selected either the Router, or Full-time/Broadband Modem options prior to the problems with RAS.
RESOLUTIONWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
If you suspect that the RAS installation is damaged, follow these steps to remove RAS:
- Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop, and then click Properties.
- Click Remote Access Service, and then click Remove. Click Yes when you are prompted to uninstall the service.
- Click Close on the main dialog box. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.
NOTE: In some cases, you need to manually remove RAS by deleting the registry keys that are listed in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

If you have Microsoft Windows NT Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) installed, follow these steps to repair the installation before continuing:
- Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop, and then click Properties.
- Click Routing and Remote Access Service, and then click Update.
- When you are prompted for the path for the update, enter the path to your RRAS installation (by default, the path is c:\program files\routing). Click Continue to reinstall RRAS. All settings will be retained.
- When you are finished, click Close on the main dialog box. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click No.
- Reapply your current Windows NT service pack, and then restart the computer when you are prompted to do so.
After RAS is completely removed (or RRAS has been prepared), continue with one of the following options. If you want to run RAS, or if RAS was damaged, or unintentionally removed, use Option 1 to reinstall. If you do not require RAS, use Option 2 to repair the POP3 Connector installation.
Option 1: Reinstall RAS
To reinstall RAS, follow these steps:
- Right-click the Network Neighborhood icon on your desktop, and then click Properties.
- Click the Services tab, and then click Add.
- Click Remote Access Service from the list on the Select Network Service dialog box. Insert your CD-ROM when you are prompted to do so. Do not restart the computer at this time.
- Check your network binding order according to the steps detailed in the following article from the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
252713 How to Properly Configure Network Binding Order on BackOffice Small Business Server System
- Reapply your current Windows NT service pack, and then restart the computer when you are prompted to do so.
Option 2: Reinstall the POP3 Connector- Locate, and then double-click to start the POP3 Connector Setup program (Popsetup.exe) in Windows NT Explorer.
- Follow the prompts in the installation wizard as appropriate. Install to the same directory in which the POP3 Connector is currently installed. Select either the Router, or Full-time/Broadband option for connection type as appropriate.
- Open the Exchange Administrator program, and then open the properties sheet for the POP3 Connector. Verify that the proper schedule is configured, and that the proper mailbox information is entered for any individual, or global accounts that are in use.
