Windows Incorrectly Displays Hardware that Supports Multiple Input Devices (280127)

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q280127

SYMPTOMS

When you use a computer running Windows Millennium Edition (Me) and you have Universal Serial Bus (USB) audio devices installed, such as a USB headset and USB amplified speakers, you may not be able to accurately select the recording or playback device that you want on the volume control (Sndvol32.exe), which can have one or more of the following behaviors:
  • After you install the audio device and restart your computer, the CD volume control may be missing.
  • The slider may not be displayed with the correct name if you have a USB audio device that requires an input selector. If there is more than one input selector, both input selectors are displayed with the same name, "USB Audio Device", on the volume control. When you select one input selector, both input selectors are selected.
  • Hardware that supports full-duplex record and playback may not be displayed correctly. The recording options, LINE IN and MIC IN, are displayed as "USB Audio Device", and you cannot select either of the input selectors. The master volume for playback is displayed as "USB Audio Device".

CAUSE

The volume control cannot differentiate between inputs with duplicate node names.
