"This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" error message when you crop an image in Photo Editor (280116)

SYMPTOMS

In Photo Editor, when you crop a small area of an image, you receive the following error message:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when all of the following conditions are true:
  • Photo Editor is installed on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me).
  • A printer or the Adobe PDF writer is installed on your computer.
  • CM is selected as the measurement unit in Photo Editor.
  • You select a very small area of an image to crop.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Office 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use inches or pixels as the unit of measurement, instead of centimeters.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3).
