SYMPTOMS

When you start Internet Explorer and you have configured your computer to automatically prompt you to start your virtual private network (VPN) connection, your VPN connection may not be established when you click Connect. Instead, you may receive an "Unable to Establish Connection" error message after you click Connect.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if Internet Explorer does not initialize a Dial-Up Networking (DUN) connection before it tries to initialize the VPN connection.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, start a VPN session before you start Internet Explorer.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
