The Installation of SQL 2000 May Be Unsuccessful (279933)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Small Business Server 2000
  • Microsoft BackOffice Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q279933

SYMPTOMS

During the installation of either Small Business Server 2000 or BackOffice Server 2000, if you attempt to install Microsoft SQL 2000, the installation of SQL 2000 may be unsuccessful, and the following error may be logged to the SQL 2000 Setup log (Sqlstp.log):
Time ValidateUser returned: 0, -2146893044, 0x0
Time Setup could not validate credentials. Ensure a valid username and password has been provided.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the SQL 2000 service account is not valid.

The Suite Integration Toolkit in Small Business Server 2000 and BackOffice Server 2000 does not validate whether or not the service account is a valid account. The Toolkit collects only the data that is going to be used by the installation program for each component of Small Business Server 2000. The validation of the SQL 2000 service account is performed during the SQL 2000 installation. If the SQL 2000 installation process is unable to validate the service account, the SQL installation is unsuccessful.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, verify that the account that is going to be used is a valid account. Then, you must run Setup again.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
