Error Message When You Install Systems Management Server with the Suite Integration Toolkit (279924)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q279924

SYMPTOMS

After you finish the installation of Systems Management Server (SMS) by using the Suite Integration Toolkit in BackOffice Server 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Windows Internet Name Service (WINS) is not currently installed. WINS is required by Systems Management Server to look up computer names. Open Add/Remove Windows Components in Control Panel to install the WINS component of Networking Services.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because SMS depends upon NetBIOS name to Internet Protocol (IP) address resolution for proper operation. Windows 2000 DNS dynamic update protocol (DDNS) provides fully qualified domain name (FQDN) to IP address resolution only. DDNS does not support NetBIOS name to IP address resolution. FQDNs are typically too long for the SMS program buffers which causes the SMS name resolution process to be unsuccessful.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, install the WINS service so that NetBIOS names can be resolved by the SMS program:
  1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
  3. Click Network Services, and then click Details.
  4. Click to select the Windows Internet Name Service check box, click OK, and then click Next.
  5. The Terminal Services Setup Wizard is displayed (if Terminal Services is installed or selected to be installed).
  6. The Terminal Services Setup Wizard reports the mode that Terminal Services is currently configured to use. Click Remote Administration.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Insert the appropriate CD-ROM, when requested. If the Add/Remove Windows Components Wizard requests the "CD-ROM labeled Service Pack 1" use CD-ROM#1 from the BackOffice Server 2000 CD-ROM pack.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

BackOffice Server 2000 Setup does not install WINS by default. WINS must be manually installed.
