SUMMARY

This article provides a list of installation requirements for BackOffice Server 2000 and Small Business Server (SBS) 2000, and a list of warning conditions that you may receive during Setup. This article also provides information about what configurations may prevent BackOffice Server 2000 or SBS 2000 from being installed.

MORE INFORMATION

You must address the following conditions before you try to install or upgrade to SBS 2000 or BackOffice Server 2000:
  • Beta versions of the product cannot by upgraded to final, released versions of the product.
  • A network adapter must be present. At least one network adapter is required for Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. For Microsoft Windows 2000, the network adapter must not be the MSLoopback adapter, and it must not use the 0.0.0.0 IP address.
  • No network adapter can be configured with an Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) address. Note that an APIPA address is in the 169.254.x.x range.
  • TCP/IP must be installed and bound to at least one network adapter.
  • Networking Properties must not be open.
  • Licensing must be set to Per Seat for BackOffice, and Per Server for Small Business Server.
  • Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) must be installed if you are upgrading a Windows 2000 Evaluation installation.
  • To upgrade, the Proxy Web Administration tool must be uninstalled.
  • To upgrade, the following Proxy 2.0 services must be stopped and set to Manual:
    • Microsoft Proxy Server Administration (mspadmin).
    • Microsoft Winsock Proxy Service (wspsrv).
    • Proxy Alert Notification Service (mailalrt).
    • World Wide Web Publishing Service (w3svc).
  • If Proxy Server 2.0 is a member of an array, it must be taken out of the array prior to upgrade. The server may be added back into the array after the upgrade.
  • Windows 2000 must be RTM build 2195.
  • When you install to a Windows 2000-based computer, be sure to stop or complete the Windows 2000 Optional Component Installation Wizard prior to installing or upgrading. The Optional Component Installation Wizard is initiated by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
  • Setup cannot be started in create/unattend mode:
    1. On a Windows 2000 evaluation version.
    2. On Windows NT 4.0.
    3. Unless joined to a domain.
    4. Unless Windows 2000 SP1 is installed.
The following considerations apply to SBS only:
  • At least one NTFS 5.0 drive must be present.
  • No trusts can be present.
  • Must be the root of a domain or a stand-alone server.
  • Setup will be blocked if there is more than one SBS server in the forest.
  • Setup must be able to contact all domain controllers in the forest.
  • The server must have at least 128 megabytes (MB) of physical memory.
In addition, an upgrade will not continue if any of the following programs are present on the computer:
  1. BackOffice 2.5.
  2. Small Business Server 4.0.
  3. Systems Management Server (SMS) 1.2.
  4. SMS 2.0 on Windows NT 4.0.
  5. Proxy 1.0.
  6. SNA Server 4.0 without SP3. Apply SNA Server SP3 prior to upgrade.
  7. Exchange 4.0.
  8. Certificate Services in Workgroup mode.
  9. Terminal Services in Application-Sharing Mode.
  10. BackOffice 2000.
  11. Internet Connection Sharing must be disabled.
The following program configurations only apply to BackOffice Basic:
  1. SMS 2.0 without SP2.
  2. SNA Server 3.0.
The following program configurations only apply to Small Business Server:
  1. NT 4.0 Standard.
  2. NT 4.0 Enterprise.
  3. Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
  4. Windows 2000 Data Center.
  5. BackOffice 4.0.
  6. BackOffice 4.5.
  7. BackOffice Basic 2000.
The following conditions will generate warnings but will not block or interfere with Setup:
  • If Visual Studio is installed, a warning will be displayed that this version of the software is meant for development purposes only.
  • The server has less than 256 MB of physical memory.
  • Video resolution is less than 800 by 600 pixels.
  • Non-standard computer name for Windows 2000 Member Server or Workgroup member. Standard naming allows A-Z, 0-9, and "-".
  • Page file is less than 100 MB.
  • Windows 2000 is at greater than SP1. This is done in the case of upgrading the Evaluation version of BackOffice or Small Business Server to Retail, Select or Visual Studio. At the end of the upgrade, the Service Pack must be re-applied.
  • SMS 2.0 SP2 on Windows 2000 will need to be removed and reinstalled in the following scenarios:
    1. After an upgrade of SMS 2.0 SP1 on a Windows 2000 domain controller to SMS 2.0 SP2.
    2. After an upgrade of a Windows NT 4.0 Backup Domain Controller to Windows 2000 with SMS 2.0 SP1.
    3. After an upgrade of a Windows NT 4.0 Primary Domain Controller to Windows 2000 with SMS 2.0 SP1.
  • The external interface is enabled for Proxy 2.0. The Proxy Services must be stopped and set to manual to complete the upgrade. As a result, the firewall is no longer functioning. If the external interface is enabled, the server is not secure.
  • Site Server with earlier than SP3 on Windows NT 4.0.
  • Site Server on Windows 2000.
The following warnings only apply to Small Business Server:
  • One SBS Server already exists in the Forest. A warning will be presented for information about migrating the existing SBS Server to the new installation.
  • During an upgrade, if the SBS 4.5 Server has more than 10 Client Licenses, a warning will be presented that upgrade Client Access Licenses must be purchased.
BackOffice has the following account dependencies:
  • Account used for upgrade must be a local administrator on the server.
  • Account used for upgrade must have rights to update the Schema if the Schema has not already been updated.
  • If the Schema has been updated, the account used for upgrade must have rights to create and/or modify Multi-Server Objects in the Active Directory.
Small Business Server has the following account dependencies:
  • In a clean installation, the first time Setup is run after the installation of Windows 2000, the Server is promoted to a domain controller. To successfully promote the server to a domain controller, the built-in administrator account must be used to run this portion of Setup.
  • In a clean installation, after the promotion of the server to a domain controller, the account used must be a local administrator.
  • In an upgrade, the account used must have permissions to update the Schema.
