The Access to the Internet May Be Unsuccessful When You Use Routing and Remote Access Service with Dial-On-Demand (279909)

SYMPTOMS

When you configure either a Windows NT 4.0-based network to use the Routing and Remote Access Service (RRAS) or a Windows 2000-based network to use the Routing and Remote Access service as a gateway to the Internet, both the client computer and server programs may be unable to access the Internet on their first attempt.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when you use a modem that has a Routing and Remote Access dial-on-demand interface to access the Internet. The behavior does not does not occur when you use a proxy server. A program that attempts to access an Internet resource through a proxy server has to wait for information from the proxy server: either the program obtains access or an error message is displayed.

Because either the RRAS (for Windows NT 4.0) or the Routing and Remote Access service (for Windows 2000) acts as a routing gateway, programs attempt to access the Internet resource directly. This access is usually unsuccessful during the first attempt because of the time delay necessary for the modem to establish a link to the resource.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods:

Manually initiate the dial-on-demand connection through either the RRAS or Routing and Remote Access administrator.
Use the Ping or a similar utility to activate the dial-on-demand connection; then, use the connection through the program you want to use after the modem link is established.
Attempt to access the resource again from the client program after the modem has had enough time to establish a link through the dial-on-demand interface.

NOTE: This behavior is not resolved if you increase the timeout value for the program.
