This article was previously published under Q279468 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Project 2000, when you save a project in Microsoft Project 98 format, and then click Send To on the File menu to send the project as an e-mail attachment, the file that is attached to the e-mail is not in Microsoft Project 98 format.
When the mail recipient tries to open the attachment in Microsoft Project 98, he or she receives the following error message:
This file was created by a later version of Microsoft Project. To open this file, you need a converter that you can download from the Web site. After downloading the converter, please restart Microsoft Project and reopen the file.
Do you want to connect to the site to download the converter now?
NOTE: There is currently no converter to convert Microsoft Project 2000 files to Microsoft Project 98 format. If the mail recipient clicks Yes, the error message links to a Web site that contains instructions on how to save files in Microsoft Project 98 format from Microsoft Project 2000.
If the mail recipient clicks No, he or she receives the following additional message:
Microsoft Project cannot open this file because the format is not recognized.
The file was probably created by a newer version of Microsoft Project.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the file that Microsoft Project attaches to the e-mail message is not a copy of the file that you saved. Instead, Microsoft Project creates a new, temporary instance of the project in the Temp folder, and attaches the new file to the e-mail message. The new file has the same name as the project that you saved, but the file is in Microsoft Project 2000 format.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, use your e-mail program's file attachment feature to send projects in the Microsoft Project 98 file format.
For example, to send a Microsoft Project 98 file to an e-mail recipient from Microsoft Outlook 2000, first create a new e-mail message in Outlook 2000. Then, with the new message open, click Insert on the File menu, locate the Microsoft Project 98 file, and attach it to the message.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
