The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Entourage 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q279461

SUMMARY

This article describes symptoms that you may see when Entourage e-mail account settings have become damaged. Symptoms include:
  • Signature File Anomalies
  • Attachment Failures
  • Incorrect Spelling Options
  • Non-Persisting Filtering Options

MORE INFORMATION

When an account becomes damaged, settings that you made during the initial configuration or settings that you migrate from other products may not function or respond to changes you make. In addition, other features that are configurable in the e-mail account or stored in the identity preferences may not function as expected.

Observed Behavior

The following list of behaviors have been noted to be associated with damaged accounts. In many cases, the symptoms fail to respond to other troubleshooting.

Signature File Anomalies

In some cases, the signature may appear in the message when no signature is currently selected to be included. In addition, the signature may be incomplete.

Attachment Failures

Recipients do not receive attachments in a usable form. Typically, a recipient may see the following statement at the top of the message followed by the encoded text of the attachment:
This message is in MIME format. Since your mail reader does not understand this format, some or all of this message may not be legible.
Attempts to change the options for encoding and for cross-platform compatibility do not have the expected effect.

Incorrect Spelling Options

When spelling options are set, messages appear to have words flagged that are correctly spelled or words that are spelled incorrectly are not flagged. When the language is checked, the default language is set to a different language than that originally selected. In some cases, the user's choice for a language is not available. Spelling options set in Microsoft Word and other Office Microsoft 2001 programs perform as expected.

Non-Persisting Filtering Options

After your set certain filtering options for messages, such as read or unread messages, and flagged or threaded items, these settings are not retained when you quit and then restart Entourage.

Rebuilding the Entourage Account Settings

In cases where one or more of the above symptoms or conditions occur and fail to respond to other attempts to resolve, creating and reconfiguring the account settings is often successful. Before rebuilding the account settings, ensure that you have recorded the messaging server addresses, user name, and passwords for the Internet account.

NOTE: Recreating the account settings does not affect messages and other items stored in the Entourage database.

To rebuild the account settings in Entourage
  1. Locate and open the folder that contains the files that make up the Identity for which you are experiencing problems. The Identities folders are found in the following default path:

    Drive:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Office 2001 Identities:Main Identity

  2. In the Identity folder, locate the Preferences file, and then move it to the Trash on the Macintosh Desktop.
  3. Restart Entourage. In the New Account wizard, enter the user information and messaging user name, password, and server address settings.
