PUB2002: Cannot Restart List Numbering Inside a Table (279376)

SYMPTOMS

When you create a numbered list that resides within one cell of a table and then create another numbered list in an adjacent cell, the new list continues the numbering sequence that was started in the first cell, instead of restarting at the number 1.

For example:

The following table shows how you want the numbering to appear.

1. Table
2. Chair
3. Couch

1. Red
2. Yellow
3. Blue

1. Horse
2. Dog
3. Cat

The following table shows how Publisher actually numbers the sequence.

1. Table
2. Chair
3. Couch

4. Red
5. Yellow
6. Blue

7. Horse
8. Dog
9. Cat

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1

You can force a break in the sequence by adding a blank line to the bottom of each adjacent cell. The blank line interrupts the numbering sequence, making it possible to start a numbered list at 1 in the cell to the right. To do this, follow these steps:

Place the insertion point at the end of the last numbered item in the list.
Press ENTER to insert a new line.
Press BACKSPACE once to delete the list number that is automatically created.

To minimize the white space that results from adding this extra line, set the Font Size to .5 points for this line only. To do this, follow these steps:

Place the insertion point on the new line.
Type .5 in the Font Size box, and then press ENTER.

Method 2

You can create a numbered list by typing the numbers manually, rather than using the automated numbering feature. To turn off automatic numbering, follow these steps:

Click AutoCorrect Options on the Tools menu.
On the AutoFormat As You Type tab, clear the Automatic numbered lists check box.
Click OK.
