OL2000: (CW) Error Message: Microsoft Outlook Could Not Sign or Encrypt this Message (279358)

NOTE: The procedures in this article only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".

SYMPTOMS

If you have set up Outlook to work offline with a set of Offline folders and you try to send a message with a digital signature, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Outlook could not sign or encrypt this message because you have no certificates which can be used to send from your e-mail address.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you have not downloaded the Global Address List for offline use.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, download the Global Address List. To do this:
  1. On the Tools menu, point to Synchronize, and then click Download Address Book while you are connected to the Microsoft Exchange Server in Outlook.
  2. In the Offline Address Book dialog box, click to select the Download changes since last synchronization check box in the Microsoft Exchange Server offline address book box.
  3. Click to select the Full Details check box in the Information to download box.
  4. In the Address Book box, verify that the Address Book field contains "\Global Address List" (without quotation marks).
  5. Click OK.
