WD2000: Invalid Page Fault When You Close "Find Data Source" in Mail Merge (279346)

SYMPTOMS

When you open a mail-merge main document and Word cannot find the document's attached data source, and then you do one of the following
  • Press ESC -or-

  • Click the Close button (the X in the upper-right corner) in the Find Data Source dialog box
Word may unexpectedly close, or you may receive one of the following error messages:
The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions.
* Check the file permissions for the document or drive.
* Use the File Open dialog box to locate the document.
(C:\path\filename)

-or-

Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium Edition (Me):

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details (on Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, press ALT+D), you receive the following message:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in WINWORD.EXE at 0167:300b1176.
NOTE: The actual memory address may vary.

Microsoft Windows NT 4.0:

An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated.

WINWORD

Exception: access violation (WINWORD.EXE, address:0167:300b1176)

Microsoft Windows 2000:

WINWORD has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.
To view the error log in Microsoft Windows 2000, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  2. In the Search for files or folders named box, type Drwtsn32.log.
  3. Click Search Now.
  4. Right-click the file, and then click Open.

    By default, the Drwtsn32.log file is located in the following folder:

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\DrWatson

CAUSE

This problem can occur when all of the following conditions are true:
  • The mail-merge main document was saved as a Web page.

    -and-
  • The attached data source is a Microsoft Access database file (*.mdb) or a Microsoft Excel worksheet that was attached to the mail-merge main document by using Microsoft Excel Worksheet via Converter ( *.xls, *.xlw).

    -and-
  • The data source was renamed, moved, or deleted.

WORKAROUND

To prevent this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Find the Data Source

To find the data source for your Web page mail-merge main document, follow these steps:
  1. Click Find Data Source.
  2. In the Open Data Source dialog box, click to select your data source, and then click Open.

Method 2: Remove and Reattach Your Data Source

  1. Click Options.
  2. Click Remove Data/Header Source to the following message:
    If the mail merge data/header source addresslist_filename no longer exists, choose Remove Data/Header Source to remove its association with mailmerge_main_document_filename or choose Remove All Merge Info to make mailmerge_main_document_filename a normal Word document.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Mail Merge.
  4. In the Mail Merge Helper, click Get Data, and then click Open Data Source.
  5. In the Open Data Source dialog box, click to select your data source, and then click Open.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
