Domain Name System Subdomain Disappears (279303)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP1
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP1

This article was previously published under Q279303

SYMPTOMS

A Domain Name System (DNS) subdomain may disappear or convert to an "A" record if there are no records created under the subdomain. For example, if you create a zone called name.com and create a subdomain called sub1.name.com, and then you do not create any host records under sub1, the zone can disappear when the DNS service is restarted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior (prevent the disappearance of the zone), you can create at least one host record in the subdomain. A host record, other than "same as parent folder", can prevent the zone from disappearing.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
