New Volume Wizard for a Dynamic Disk States Incorrect Volume Types (279252)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q279252

SYMPTOMS

On a Microsoft Windows XP Professional-based computer, when you use the New Volume Wizard on a dynamic disk, you receive a message dialog box that states that there are five volume types:
  • Simple
  • Spanned
  • Striped
  • Mirrored
  • RAID-5
However, the same dialog box only has three options that are available to choose from to create the volume:
  • Simple
  • Spanned
  • Striped

CAUSE

Windows XP Professional supports dynamic disks, but does not support RAID; the missing items do not apply to Professional. This issue does not affect Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, as it does not support dynamic disks.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, if you require RAID and you are using a computer that is running Windows XP Professional, use a hardware-based RAID solution. There is no way to enable the RAID software in Windows XP Professional.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
