SYMPTOMS
The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) process (Winmgmt.exe) may stop responding (hang) when queries are run against the Win32_QuickFixEngineering class. When this situation occurs, memory usage and CPU usage for the Winmgmt.exe process rise dramatically. You can return WMI to a typical state by stopping and restarting the process.
To stop and restart WMI, type the following lines at a command prompt:
net stop winmgmt
net start winmgmt

Using the Hotfix Installer
Note You can use this method only for Intel-based computers with Windows 2000 installed.
- Copy the hotfix program file (Q279225.exe) to a local folder on your computer or to a share on your network.
- Run the Q279225.exe file and follow the directions.
- Restart your computer.
