WMI Win32_QuickFixEngineering Queries Cause Winmgmt Process to Hang (279225)

SYMPTOMS

The Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) process (Winmgmt.exe) may stop responding (hang) when queries are run against the Win32_QuickFixEngineering class. When this situation occurs, memory usage and CPU usage for the Winmgmt.exe process rise dramatically. You can return WMI to a typical state by stopping and restarting the process.

To stop and restart WMI, type the following lines at a command prompt:

net stop winmgmt
net start winmgmt

Using the Hotfix Installer

Note You can use this method only for Intel-based computers with Windows 2000 installed.
  1. Copy the hotfix program file (Q279225.exe) to a local folder on your computer or to a share on your network.
  2. Run the Q279225.exe file and follow the directions.
  3. Restart your computer.
Windows NT 4.0A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
