SYMPTOMS

When you use the Polish proofing tools to check the spelling and grammar of text formatted as Polish, Word may stop responding (hang).

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, do not check grammar in the document. To prevent Word from automatically checking grammar as you type and from automatically checking grammar when you check spelling, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Spelling and Grammar tab, click to clear the Check grammar as you type and Check grammar with spelling check boxes.
  3. Click OK.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. Use Word 2000 Polish, or Word 2000 English with Polish proofing tools and Polish keyboard installed.

    NOTE: In Microsoft Windows 2000, double-click Regional Options in Control Panel (click Start menu, point to Settings and then click Control Panel). On the General tab, click to select Central European language support.
  2. Type the word suwalki (the l should be the Polish lowercase l with a stroke through it).
  3. Press F7 to check spelling and grammar.
