SUMMARY

This article discusses the process to remove and reinstall Microsoft Windows NT Option Pack (NTOP), Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0, and Small Business Server 4.5 console.

MORE INFORMATION

In some situations, Internet Information Services (IIS) 4.0 must be removed and reinstalled. This process requires the removal and reinstallation of the Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. Also, the components in Small Business Server 4.5 that depend on the Option Pack: Proxy Server 2.0, Outlook Web Access, and the Small Business Server console, have to be reinstalled.

The following process can be used to remove and to reinstall the Windows NT Option Pack and all the components that are dependent upon it:
  1. Backup any custom Web sites that are hosted on the server.

NOTE: When you remove the NT Option Pack, you also remove any Web sites that are hosted on the server.
  2. Stop all the Proxy services in the Services tool of Control Panel. Use the Add/ Remove programs tool to uninstall Proxy Server 2.0. Verify that Proxy has been completely removed by using the instructions in the following article:

186815 How to Manually Remove Proxy Server 1.0 and 2.0

  3. Remove Windows NT Option Pack by running the Setup.exe program from F:\Ntoptpak\En\x86\Winnt.srv, where F: is Small Business Server CD-ROM #2. When you are prompted, click Remove All. Verify that the file Metabase.bin has been deleted from your hard drive.
  4. Restart the server.
  5. Use the Small Business Server Setup program to reinstall Windows NT Option Pack and Proxy Server, as well as all dependencies (for example, Microsoft Data Access Components [MDAC], Active Directory Service Interfaces [ADSI], and Microsoft Management Console [MMC]). Do not restart the server at this time if you have Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 or later on your system. Your system may become unstable if you do not reapply the current Service Pack.

NOTE: During the installation, you may notice that hard drive activity drops to near zero and the progress bar stops moving for an extended period. Check for the presence of a new window which may have opened behind the primary window prompting for permission to replace a newer file. The new window may be accessed from the task bar.
  6. Reinstall the Small Business Server 4.5 console by using the information in the following article:

226331 Reinstalling the Small Business Server Console

NOTE: When the the computer is restarted after the Small Business Server 4.5 console is reinstalled, an error message may be displayed stating that the Fax service cannot log on to the administrator's MAPI profile. If this error is displayed, recreate the MAPI profile by using the information in the following article:

225101 Reinstalling Small Business Server 4.5 Console Deletes All MAPI Profiles on Server

  7. If the server has Windows NT Service Pack 5, 6.0a, or later for Windows NT 4.0, reapply the Service Pack and any additional hotfixes or patches and then restart the server.
  8. If the server had Outlook Web Access installed, reinstall it by using the information in the following article:

233204 Installing Outlook Web Access on Small Business Server 4.5

NOTE: If Outlook Web Access installation fails or stops responding, use the procedure that is described in the following article to remove all traces of Outlook Web Access completely before you reinstall it:

  9. If the server is hosting any additional Web sites, restore the Web sites that you backed up in step 1. If you did not back up the Web sites, you must recreate them.
  10. Run the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) to configure the Proxy server settings and establish the default packet filters. Additional packet filters can be created in the Internet Service Manager.
  11. The ICW will enable access control by default, though only the Administrator account will be granted access to the Internet. Use the Small Business Server console to grant users access to the Internet.
