WD2000: Outlook Address Book Not Available in Mail Merge Helper (278997)

SYMPTOMS

When you click Get Data in the Mail Merge Helper (on the Tools menu, click Mail Merge), you may experience either of the following symptoms:
  • The Use Address Book option may be unavailable (dimmed).

    -or-
  • When you click Use Address Book, Outlook Address Book may be unavailable.

CAUSE

The tools for integrating Word 2000 with Microsoft Exchange Personal Address Book and Microsoft Outlook Address Book are not installed. The converter and tools are required if you want to use the Microsoft Outlook Address Book in a mail merge.

NOTE: The Address Book converter and tools are installed by default when you run a Typical Setup.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Microsoft Word and all Microsoft Office programs.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. On the Install/Uninstall tab (in Microsoft Windows 2000, in the Add/Remove Programs dialog box), click to select your version of Microsoft Office 2000 (for example, click Microsoft Office 2000 Premium), and then click Add/Remove. (In Windows 2000, click Change.)
  5. In Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode, click Add or Remove Features.
  6. Click the plus sign (+) to the left of Microsoft Word for Windows to expand the available options.

    NOTE: If you are installing from Microsoft Office 2000 and do not see Microsoft Word for Windows, click the plus sign to the left of Microsoft Office.
  7. Click the down arrow on the icon for Address Book, and then click Run from my computer on the list that appears.
  8. Click Update Now and continue through the Office 2000 Setup dialog boxes until Setup is complete.
