Web Site Hosting on a Mutli-Homed Small Business Server (278871)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q278871

SUMMARY

In Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5, you should not change the default Web site settings, such as permissions and security, because the Small Business Console runs from the default Web site.

To host a Web site on the SBS server, it is recommended that you create a Web site in Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and bind it to the external Interface IP Address.

Multiple Web Sites

To host more than one Internet Web site on SBS, you have to decide whether to use Host Headers or multiple IP addresses.

With Host Headers you can use one IP address to host multiple Web sites by leaving the default IP setting, All Unassigned, unmodified. You should only use Host Headers for additional Web sites that will be hosted by a server. For additional information about Host Headers if you are going to use them for your Web sites, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

190008 HOW TO: Use Host Header Names to Host Multiple Sites from One IP Address in IIS 5.0

If you have multiple IP addresses that are bound to your external network adapter, each Web site can use an IP address. To do this, in step 6 of the procedure "To Create an Internet Web Site in SBS 4.5," select a different external IP for each Web site.

Note: Whether you are hosting one Web site or multiple Web sites on the SBS server, contact your Internet service provider (ISP) and request that they add or update the Host records to point to the proper IP address for the domain names of the Web sites that you will host.
