SYMPTOMS

Your system may record the following event in the system event log:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7001
Date: 11/1/2000
Time: 12:18:01 PM
User: N/A
Computer: Server
Description:
The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service depends on the NetBIOS over TCP/IP service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because NetBIOS over Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is disabled.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, you must enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, by performing the following steps:

Open Device Manager.
On the View menu, click to select the Show hidden devices check box.
Double-click Non-Plug and Play Drivers.
Double-click NetBIOS over Tcpip.
In the Device usage box, click Use this device (enable).

When you restart the system, the server may take longer to restart. If this behavior occurs, go to the following registry key:

HKey_Local_Machine/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Netlogon/DependOnService

Double-click DependOnService and in the multi-string editor add the following value (if it is not already present):

LanmanServer
