OL98: The Program Appears to Stop Responding When You Try to Open a Pasted Outlook Attachment (278610)

SYMPTOMS

When you receive an attachment such as a text file (.txt) in Outlook and you copy and paste the attachment into a Microsoft Word .doc file (or another Microsoft Office program), the program appears to stop responding and your pointer may appear as an hourglass when you try to open the attachment.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the Opening Mail Attachment dialog box on the taskbar is minimized and you do not receive the prompt to either Open or Save the file to the disk

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following three methods to work around this problem:

Method 1

Click the minimized Opening Mail Attachment dialog box from the task bar to change the focus from the application to the attachment, and then click either Open or Save.

Method 2

In the Opening Mail Attachment dialog box, click to clear the Always ask before opening this type of file check box.

Method 3

On the Tools menu, click Options, click Security, and then click Attachment Security to set the Outlook Attachment Security to "none."

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
