XADM: Name of the Distribution List Is Truncated in the Pre-Windows 2000 Box (278403)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5

This article was previously published under Q278403

SYMPTOMS

When an Exchange Server 5.5 distribution list is replicated to the Microsoft Windows 2000 domain by using an Active Directory Connector (ADC) Connection Agreement, the name of the distribution list is truncated to 20 characters in the Pre-Windows 2000 box.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use either of the following methods:
  • Edit the name of the Exchange Server 5.5 distribution list so that it is less than 20 characters.

    -or-
  • Do not use Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 User Manager to administer domains that contain long group names.

MORE INFORMATION

In a Windows NT Server 4.0 environment, if global groups have names that are more than 20 characters, User Manager cannot edit them and the following error message is displayed:
The following error occurred accessing the properties of the Group "Group Name"

The handle is invalid

The Group properties cannot be edited or viewed at this time.
ADC also enforces this limitation to avoid mixed-mode scenarios where there are Windows NT Server 4.0 domain controllers as well as native-mode domains that contain Windows NT Server 4.0 member servers.

In an ADC Connection Agreement, Exchange Server 5.5 groups are replicated to Windows 2000 native-mode domains as Universal Distribution Groups (UDG). UDGs are not displayed in Windows NT Server 4.0 User Manager for Domains. When UDGs are used for public folders with Access Control settings, they are converted to Universal Security Groups if Windows 2000 is in native mode. At this point, the UDG is displayed in Windows NT Server 4.0 User Manager for Domains.
