You Cannot Assign HP 6300 Scanner Buttons to Outlook 2000 (278291)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q278291

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the e-mail button on the Hewlett Packard (HP) 6300 scanner with Microsoft Outlook 2000 as your e-mail client on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you receive the following error message:
Document management applications that can be used with this button were not found. For a list see Start/Programs/hpscanjet/hponline/hp scanjet readme.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Outlook 2000 is not a Still Image Architecture (STI) program. You can only associate buttons to programs that register with STI or Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), otherwise the program cannot communicate with the scanner or camera to retrieve the image.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The WIA interface is both an API and a DDI. The WIA API is designed to allow programs to:
  • Run in a robust and stable environment.
  • Minimize interoperability problems.
  • Enumerate available image acquisition devices.
  • Create connections to multiple devices simultaneously.
  • Query properties of devices in a standard and expandable manner.
  • Acquire device data using standard and high performance transfer mechanisms.
  • Maintain image properties across data transfers.
  • Receive notification of a wide variety of device events.
The STI API is a standardized interface for acquiring digital still images from devices that are primarily used to capture still images. The following list contains examples of devices that are accessible through the STI API:
  • Flatbed scanners (scanners with automatic document feeder, transparency adapter, or other options such as a start button).
  • Sheet-fed scanners (scanners with paper-inserted detection mechanism).
  • Handheld scanners.
  • Still-image digital cameras (cameras with stored images and associated data such as thumbnails and audio).
