Setting Up Identical Multicast Stations Only Works on One Server (278287)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Services 4.0
  • Microsoft Windows Media Services 4.1

This article was previously published under Q278287

SYMPTOMS

When you configure multiple Windows Media Services multicast stations to be exactly the same, it is beneficial to be able to use only 1 ASX and NSC file for each of the multicast regions. When you connect to the NSC file it only works for the original region that created the NSC file. Other regions give the following error message:
Can not connect to the multicast station. (0xC00D07F2)

CAUSE

This is caused because even though you are configuring the stations the same, the server randomly generates a stream key for each station it creates.

RESOLUTION

Instead of creating the station in the administrator, import the NSC file from the first station. Importing the NSC file from the first station insures that the stream key is the same on every server.

To import the NSC file, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Windows Media Administrator
  2. Select Multicast Stations.
  3. Under the Station pane, point to Stations, and then click Import.
  4. Select Import a new station from an existing station file (.nsc).
  5. Click Import.
  6. Browse to the NSC file.
You can now connect to the multicast stations on both servers through the same NSC file.
