OL2002: SMTP Address Goes into 'To' Field When You Click 'Reply to All' in IMAP Message (278187)

This article was previously published under Q278187 SYMPTOMS
When you are running Outlook 2002 and you use Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) to gain access to the Exchange Server computer, clicking Reply to All in a message may result in your own Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) address's being included in the To field of the new message.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the e-mail address in your IMAP account properties in Outlook does not match your SMTP address on the Exchange Server computer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, change the address in your IMAP account to match the SMTP address on the server:
- Start Outlook 2002.
- On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
- In the E-Mail Accounts dialog box, click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
- Click your IMAP server account, and then click Change.
- In the E-mail Address box, change the address to your complete SMTP address, not an alias of the address.
- Click Next to close the IMAP account properties.
- Click Finish to close the E-Mail Accounts dialog box.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. MORE INFORMATION
Exchange Server allows the creation of multiple aliases for an e-mail account. For example, if your e-mail address in the IMAP account is user1@mail.domain.com and the actual address on the server is user1@domain.com, Exchange Server translates either address or alias to your Distinguished Name (DN) and delivers the message to you.
However, when you use IMAP and you click Reply to All in a message that is addressed to an alias other than what is in the IMAP account properties, Outlook 2002 does not resolve the e-mail address to the address on the server. Because Outlook does not associate the two addresses with the same person, it places the message's original address in the To field.
