You receive an "Internal Error 2250" or "Internal Error 2251" error message when you update administrative installation to Office 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP 2) (278078)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 2000 (Setup) Service Pack 2 (SP-2)

This article was previously published under Q278078

SYMPTOMS

When you apply the Office 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP-2) Administrative Update to an Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a administrative installation, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Internal Error 2250: Please contact product support for assistance.
or
Internal Error 2251: Please contact product support for assistance.

CAUSE

You may receive the first error message if you already applied the Outlook E-mail Security Update (Oqfe7117_Admin.msp) to your administrative installation, and you are applying the Out2kmst.msp file from the SP-2 administrative update.

You may receive the second error message if you already applied the Excel/PowerPoint 2000 SR-1 HTML Script Vulnerability administrative update (Oqfe7752.msp) to your administrative installation, and you are applying the Pptmst.msp file from the SP-2 administrative update.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, click OK when you receive either of the error messages, and then click OK when you are advised that your installation ended prematurely because of an error. The error messages listed in the "Symptoms" section of this article indicate that you already applied the update to your administrative installation, so you can skip the .msp file you used that generated the error message. Apply any other .msp files included in the SP-2 administrative update that have not yet been applied to your administrative installation.

To avoid this error when you install future patches, please refer to the appropriate information that follows, according to the operating system you are using to apply the patch.

STATUS

MORE INFORMATION

When you apply Office 2000 SP-2, you should attempt to install all the .msp files. If you receive one of the error messages listed earlier in this article, you can disregard it, because the error message indicates that the .msp file is already installed.

Omitting the installation of the Out2kmst.msp file is not an option if you do not want the Outlook E-mail Security Update, because the necessary registry updates are contained in the file. The Out2kmst.msp, Pptmst.msp, and Excelmst.msp files update the registry, and the Sp2admin.msp file updates the files on the computer. Updated versions of all .msp files must be applied to the computer in order for the upgrade to succeed. Failure to apply all .msp files will put the Office 2000 SP-2 Administrative image in an unsupported state.
