SUMMARY

This article describes the Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 migration component of the enhanced Migration Wizard. The Migration Wizard that is available with Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 can migrate mailboxes from a server that is running Exchange Server 5.5 in one organization to an Exchange server in a separate organization.

MORE INFORMATION

The enhanced Migration Wizard is an extension to the original release version of the Migration Wizard. Additionally, the enhanced Migration Wizard is upgraded with a new version of Mlmig32.dll. The Migration Wizard does not delete or disable the source mailbox or its contents. Besides migrating mailbox data, the Migration Wizard migrates the Exchange Server 5.5 mailboxes X.400, SMTP, cc:Mail, MS-Mail, and other e-mail addresses on to the E-mail Addresses tab of the new Active Directory account.

When you run the Mailmig.exe program to start the Migration Wizard, the new Migrate from Microsoft Exchange 5.5 option is available. The enhanced Migration Wizard lets you select which Exchange Server 5.5 mailboxes to migrate. Then, the enhanced Migration Wizard matches the mailboxes with Active Directory accounts or creates new accounts that exist. After the mailboxes are created and matched, Exchange Server 5.5 mailbox objects are copied to the target Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 mailboxes.

If any issues occur during the migration, troubleshoot the errors by using the Application event log. Then, correct any issue, and migrate the problematic Exchange Server 5.5 mailboxes again. If you migrate to the same target mailbox repeatedly, duplicate messages may be created.

The enhanced Migration Wizard in Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 1 (SP1) does not migrate mailboxes from Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 to another Exchange 2000 Server or Exchange Server 2003 server. Additionally, the enhanced Migration Wizard in Exchange 2000 Server SP1 does not migrate distribution lists, custom recipients, or public folders. However, starting with Exchange 2000 Server Service Pack 2 (SP2) and later versions, the Migration Wizard supports migration from Exchange 2000 Server and from Exchange Server 2003. The Migration Wizard does not clean up accounts on the Exchange Server 5.5 server after migration or preserve access control lists (ACLs) to other mailboxes or public folders.
