The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP1
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP1
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP1

This article was previously published under Q277997

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use a device on a computer that is running Windows 2000, you may have trouble gaining access to the device.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur when devices that are managed through the Scsiport.sys file are shut down at the same time. This causes the logical unit number (LUN) information not to be detected properly. When Plug and Play tries unsuccessfully to identify the device, it returns a repetitive timeout report, and then you cannot gain access to the device.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

   11/03/2000 09:57p 5.0.2195.2645 72,688 scsiport.sys

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

The Scsiport.sys file is responsible for cleaning up logical unit number (LUN) information stored in the SCSI port driver. The function does remove the LUN information from its internal storage, but it does not update its count for the number of logical units.
