Problems Hot-Plugging USB Floppy Disk Drive (277763)

SYMPTOMS

If you unplug (disconnect) and reconnect a Universal Serial Bus (USB) floppy disk drive while Windows Millennium Edition (Me) is running, or you hot-undock and dock a computer that is running Windows Me while a USB floppy disk drive is connected to the dock, the following symptoms may occur:
  • The USB floppy disk drive may be assigned a drive letter other than drive A, even if there is no other (legacy, or original type) floppy disk drive present. The drive letter that is assigned to the USB floppy disk drive may be the last drive letter in use (in sequence, after drive letters for hard disks and CD-ROM drives). For example, if drive letters C through F are used by hard disks and CD-ROM drives, the USB floppy disk drive may appear as drive letter G.
  • If you hot-undock and dock the computer while a USB floppy disk drive is connected to the dock, the USB floppy disk drive may not be assigned a drive letter.
  • When you disconnect and reconnect the USB floppy disk drive, it may not have the same drive letter as before you disconnected it. For example, if the USB floppy disk drive appeared as drive G after startup, it may appear as drive A after you disconnect and reconnect it. This may occur even if another (legacy, or original type) floppy disk drive already appears as drive A.

RESOLUTION

To restore the original drive letter assignments as they were when you first started the computer, shut down and restart your computer.
