XL2002: Unable to Save File as Excel Add-In Unless Active Sheet Is a Worksheet (277583)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to save your workbook as a Microsoft Excel add-in, you may be unable to do so as expected.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if there are no worksheets in the active workbook, or if the currently selected sheet is any of the following types:
  • Chart sheet
  • Microsoft Excel 4.0 macro sheet
  • Microsoft Excel 5.0 dialog sheet
To save a file as a Microsoft Excel add-in, the currently selected sheet must be a worksheet. If the active sheet is not a worksheet, Microsoft Excel Add-In is not an available option in the Save as type list in the Save As dialog box.

WORKAROUND

To save the current file as an Excel add-in, follow these steps:
  1. Select a worksheet.

    NOTE: If your workbook does not contain a worksheet, click the Insert menu, and then click Worksheet.

    Notice that a new blank worksheet is added to the workbook.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the File name box, type the name that you want for the Excel add-in.
  4. In the Save as type list, click Microsoft Excel Add-In.
  5. Click Save.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
